The company was founded in 1888 to repair equipment used in copper mining. Almost 50 years later, the company was re-registered as Sumitomo Machinery Co. From that point on, the company began producing equipment for the metallurgical and transportation industries. This specialization was chosen because these two industries were experiencing a real boom in Japan at the time.
In 1969, Sumitomo Machinery Co., Ltd. merged with Uraga Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. The combined company received its current name: Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. As before, the company's strategy was based on technical know-how to meet the ever-changing needs of various industries.
